Jumpstart
What is the Jumpstart Program?
This innovative program is to support ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) to transition to college coursework successfully. In Jumpstart, students take college-level coursework in a cohort (group) setting:
There is a Full-time Day Program and a Part-time Evening Program in Jumpstart.
Day programs are in-person. Evening program is on Zoom.
Both programs are offered in fall, winter and spring quarters. There is no summer Jumpstart.
Who the program is for?
- Classes are for students currently registered in our ESOL or ELCAP programs who intend to transition to college in 1-2 quarters. Learn more about the program by reading All about Jumpstart.

Common Questions
- I have a degree from my home country. Can I earn credit in the US?
- Great Question! You need to visit the Welcome Back Center. They can help answer your questions.
- I don’t have a high school diploma from my country. Can I apply?
- Yes! A high school diploma is not required to apply for Jumpstart.
- I don’t know what I want to study in college yet. What can I do?
- Visit the Transition Success Center. There you can meet with an advisor and get help exploring the different programs at Highline.
- What ELCAP classes can I take to help me prepare for Jumpstart?
- I recommend taking Digital Literacy, Math class, and Bridge to College. In Digital Literacy, you will learn important technology skills. In Math class, you will review math concepts that will help you prepare for Jumpstart Math. In Bridge to College, you will explore programs at Highline and learn about the steps to transition to college.
- What if I start Jumpstart, but I’m not ready, or I can’t finish the program. What happens?
- Sometimes students change their minds or their lives are very busy and they can’t commit the hours to complete the program. It’s ok. You can continue in ESOL classes and apply again in the future when you are ready.
